On behalf of Meriwether Lewis, Philadelphia merchants Harvey & Worth sell eight gross (over 1100) sewing awls to Israel Whelan, U.S. Army Purveyor of Public Supplies. The awls will be used mostly as gifts for Native People and eventually, by the enlisted men to make their own leather clothes.
