Passing Bon Homme Island

The boats navigate around a large island that some name Elk Island where several of that animal are killed. They describe unusual sand ridges which appear to them to be Indian fortifications, and Lewis collects specimens of purple prairie-clover and pasture sagewort. Camp is near present Springfield, South Dakota.

Ancient Fortifications?

On the bank opposite our camp is an ancient fortification or breastwork, similar to those which have been occasionally discovered on the western waters.
