Parting ways at Frankfort

Meriwether Lewis and Mandan chief Sheheke’s family leave Frankfort bound for Washington City via the Wilderness Road. Also headed to Washington, Pierre Chouteau takes the Osage delegation through Lexington. The two parties will not re-unite until late December.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1806

Captain Lewis arrived in this place on Thursday last, and on Saturday morning [15 November], proceeded on his journey to the city of Washington, by way of the Old Wilderness road. He was accompanied by the chief of the Mandane Indians; and a party of the Osages. Mr. Chouteau, with the latter, took their route through Lexington.[1]Frankfort, Kentucky, The Palladium, 20 November 1806.

Osage Delegation Reaches Lexington

Mr. Choteau, with a company of Osage Indians, who accompanied captain Lewis, arrived in town [Lexington] on Saturday [15 November] evening last, on their way to the feat of the Federal Government.[2]Lexington Kentucky Gazette, 17 November 1806, page 3.
