Meriwether Lewis and his Philadelphia friend Mahlon Dickerson dine at “Dr. Logans”—likely at the country estate of the U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania, George Logan, a key supporter of Thomas Jefferson‘s expedition to the Western Sea. The evening is spent with another supportive politician, Pennsylvania Governor Thomas McKean.
Dickerson’s Delightful Day
Sun. 15. A delightful day—dined at Dr. Logans with Capt. Lewis—spent the evg. chez le Gov.
—Mahlon Dickerson
Stenton House (see fig.) was built by James Logan, George Logan’s grandfather. Lewis and Dickerson likely enjoyed the restrained early Georgian architecture, tempered by the straightforward strength and simplicity befitting a Quaker farmer. At the time, Logan was a U.S. Senator and had gathered a famous library that included his own publications in science
The “chez le Gov.” likely was the house of Pennsylvania governor, Thomas McKean.
